With a father in the military, Mary never put down roots for long until she arrived in Austin 34 years ago. She has a long history of public service, as a public health educator, as an attorney for the Women’s Advocacy Project in Austin, and as a high school teacher at Austin’s Crockett High School. She also served on the Teacher Advisory Council for U.S. Education Initiatives, and was one of 20 nationally on the Teacher Advisory Panel for Measures of Effective Teaching Project for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
Mary is passionate about social justice. Her favorite projects are her three children, Joe, Rose and Piet. Her hobbies are entertaining—she’s an amazing cook—reading and traveling. Her favorite book is Wallace Stegner’s The Angle of Repose; her favorite movie is Dr. Strangelove, and her favorite musicians are Etta James, Sam Cooke and The Rolling Stones. Mary loathes mean people, though she secretly loves violent movies, and she admits to being bossy at times. She also enjoys math and logic puzzles.
